NAIDOC WEEK AT ST PATRICK’S

The school community at St Patrick’s, Swansea recently celebrated NAIDOC Week.

The students were immersed in the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through a variety of activities which included traditional games of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, various artistic projects, Awabakal Dreaming stories, and traditional dance and music. A highlight of the day was liturgy in which the theme of ‘water’ provided the link between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and our Catholic faith. For the traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, water is essential to survival. In the Catholic tradition, water is a sign of new life in Christ. For both traditions, water is a central theme in the stories of creation.

Our sincere thanks to our Aboriginal Education Teacher, Ben McCarthy, who organised the day. Thanks also to Craig Duncan (a Kamilaroi man and CSO Education Officer) and Matt Nicoll (a Wiradjuri man and member of our parent community) who ran several of the activities.
