St Mary’s Gateshead aerobics team win silver at Nationals

St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead, has introduced a new sporting endeavour for students – Aerobics!

Three teams from Years 7 to 9 commenced training in March during Friday afternoon sport and Monday nights to compete at the State Qualifying Series in June at the Griffith Duncan Theatre.

During this event, each team – Intensity (Year 8), Illuminate (Year 9) and Avalanche (Year 7) – demonstrated a high level of fitness, aerobic ability, strength and technique. Intensity won gold, Illuminate won bronze and Avalanche received the wildcard which progressed each team to the National Series in Brisbane.

The National Championships were held on Saturday 11 August at the Sleeman Sport Centre in Brisbane, with each team competing in their first ever National Federation of International Sport Aerobics & Fitness (FISAF) Competition.

Each team did exceptionally well on the day with St Mary’s announced as the silver medallists in the pre-choreographed category and Illuminate placing fifth in the small teams category. A team member of Avalanche also received the Judges Choice National Sportsmanship Award.

St Mary’s accolades continued with Samantha McFarlene and Lara Moore becoming finalists in a new category called Aero X which is based on skill, technique, strength and flexibility. Up against tough competition Samantha Mc Farlene convincingly won the silver medal.

Congratulations to all students on an outstanding achievement!
