Bob the Builder Awards – A big hit at St Pius X Windale

With the current push to develop interesting and colourful playground spaces that support student’s wellbeing, the St Pius X Primary School, Windale, community have taken on a major design project of building a new play space.

The new space features a polished wooden deck area, a cubbyhouse and a mud kitchen as well as shaded areas for quiet reading and games.

During the planning process, the school held a working bee inviting family and friends of the school community to upgrade the gardens as well as begin the foundations of the deck underway.

Support from staff family members and a small squad of willing workers conscripted by the Principal, Peter Bowen’s tennis mates have also been a great asset to the building team and have seen the project near to completion.

With all of the combined talents incorporated in the building project, the greatest reward is seeing the children involved - hence, the 'Bob the Builder Awards' were created.

As the deck was being laid, screws were deliberately left out. Students who were working well in class and are showing care and respect for one another are given the award.

Each day after the recess break, the students who had received the awards for the day assisted Mr Bowen finding the missing screws and putting them in place.

One student, Ethan thought it was “awesome” to be using the tools to help build the deck, while Johnny loves building and often helps his dad. He also loves the new deck area and can’t wait to be playing on it. Jakarra thinks the Bob the Builder awards are great as she can use the drill and help build the deck.

They also enjoy the new block pit where the offcuts of the deck have gone – it allows them to continue their love of building.

All in all, the students have responded brilliantly to being a 'Bob the Builder' and are really looking forward to playing on the new play space in 2018.
