Bishops staff day: Introduction, Information, Inspiration

Staff from the across the diocese braved a chilly autumn morning on Tuesday 30 May to take part in the Bishop’s Staff Day pilgrimage walk. More than 130 members of staff completed the 13km journey from Corcoran Parish Centre, George St, Morpeth to St John the Baptist Chapel, Cathedral Street, Maitland.

Inspired by the themes of Introduction, Information and Inspiration, the pilgrims retraced the footsteps of Maitland’s first Bishop, James Murray, and gained great insights into the Church’s early history and its importance to the wider community. Staff were treated to various “Voices from the Past” as well as informative sessions presented by local historians.

One of the day’s highlights was Mark Spencer’s rendition of Bishop James Murray complete with Irish accent and full episcopal garb. Staff enjoyed a beautifully catered lunch at the Therry Centre and heard talks from past voices - Caroline Chisholm (Maureen Salmon RSJ) and Sr M Hyacinth Donnellan OP (Denise Sullivan OP).

The pilgrimage was a great opportunity for staff from various agencies to connect and socialise and a real sense of camaraderie was generated throughout the day. This was a Bishop’s Staff day unlike any other and is a testament to the planning committee as well as the volunteers who gave their time to help make this a very memorable day.
