More than $208,000 raised for Project Compassion: Learning more, creating change

In 2016, more than $11 million was raised nationally for Caritas Project Compassion, with more than $208,000 contributed by the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

Funds raised during Project Compassion assist some of the world’s poorest communities in Laos, Malawi, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, India and some indigenous Australian communities, by providing education, access to clean water and nutrition.

The 2016 theme, ‘learning more, creating change’ aims to end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity by empowering communities with not only basic nutrition and clean water, but training and education that will create lasting change in sustainable living and transform futures. “Education is an act of hope,” said Pope Francis. Project Compassion funds provide vital learning and renewed hope to those communities.

Vice Chancellor Pastoral Ministries, Teresa Brierley, said, “Parishioners and school communities have again given generously to the cause of overseas aid and development. They clearly understand the needs of those less fortunate than ourselves and have responded so that those in need are able to learn more and create change.”

Caritas Australia CEO, Paul O’Callaghan, said he has been overwhelmed by the generous response of supporters. “This money will enable Caritas to continue our life-changing work with those most marginalised in more than 30 countries, globally and within Australia.”
