Sporting Champions of the Future

Over the last four days 3 incredibly talented athletes not only represented the Diocese & Polding but represented NSWPSSA at the School Sport Australia Athletics Championships which were held in Launceston.

Oliver Sciulli from St Joseph’s Primary School, Merewether flew home to win his heat of the 10yrs 100m and qualified for the National final. Making the final of a national race is an achievement in itself. Oliver kept his nerve and ran his heart out to be awarded a bronze medal – 3rd fastest 100m sprinter in Australia for 10 yr olds. The NSW team was way too strong in the relay and took out gold in the 4 x 100m where Oliver ran his leg well. What an achievement, 2 medals at National level.

Sebastian Stace from St Joseph’s Primary School, East Maitland qualified in the 8-10 yrs multiclass 800m. He ran so well and can now call himself the 2nd fastest 10 year old in the 800m multiclass in Australia! Sebastian stood proudly on the podium to receive his silver medal. Sebastian was asked to compete for the Northern Territory 4 x 100m relay which also medalled.

Olive Wade from St Joseph’s Primary School, Charlestown represented NSW in the 12-13yrs girls high jump. She had an early start on a chilly Sunday morning but warmed up quickly, clearing her first few jumps easily. Olive who only started doing high jump this year showed great resilience under pressure. She finished 9th in Australia. The winner of her age group went on where her final jump was to beat the national record of 1.7m which is held by Eleanor Patterson (Commonwealth Games & World Championships medallist). Olive was also a member of the 4 x 100m combined U12 relay where the team outdid themselves to win gold.

Congratulations to these amazing athletes who all have not only medalled at this National event, but have met many friends along the way, enjoyed the camaraderie of this level of competition and the support of their wonderful families. It was wonderful to watch our students cheering on their NSW team mates throughout the 4 days.
