Matildas in the making

Four Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle school students proudly represented the Diocese and Polding at the NSW PSSA Football State Championships in Nelson Bay last week.

The Polding team only trained together for 1 hour (in the rain!), before recording four wins (Hunter yellow, CIS, Sydney South West & Western) and two losses (Sydney West & MacKillop) to finish 3rd in their pool.

They played Hunter Blue in the playoff for 5th and 6th and went down 2-0, to finish 6th overall. The girls were excellent representatives and showed great skill and sports personship.

The Maitland Newcastle girls in the Polding team included:

  • Mia Sabotkovski (St Therese's, New Lambton)
  • Alannah Evans (St Mary's, Warners Bay)
  • Matilda Fleming (Holy Family, Merewether Beach)
  • Gemma Mooney (Our Lady of Victories, Shortland)

The Diocese also had two boys in the Polding team at the Boys NSW PSSA event at Nelson Bay. They beat North West, Western, Sydney North and Sydney West. They drew with MacKillop and lost only to CIS and missed the semis on goal averages. In a play off with Hunter for  5th and 6th, they lost 2-1 to finish 6th overall.

The boys from the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle in the Polding team included:

  • Harrison Searle (St Joseph’s Charlestown)
  • Felix Pasvolsky (St Joseph’s Merewether)
