GALLERY: Pecking order announced for ASPIRE songwriters

Originality soared on Monday 30 November at the Civic Playhouse in Newcastle when the final of the ASPIRE song competition showcased 11 of the 15 shortlisted finalists.

It was great to experience the performances of these original songs based on the themes Birdsong or The Pecking Order”. Plans had been put on hold in March due to COVID.

The audience lapped up pieces that ranged from ballads to rock and rap. As always, it was heartening to see older, more experienced musicians lending their skills to the younger counterparts and playing and singing backing vocals.

Congratulations to Primary winners Gabrielle Moyle and Lily Edwards with their song Fly Away and Secondary winners Jordan Snowden with his song Red P’s and Patrick Gutheridge with his song SightlessJudges Anna Kerrigan, Ruth McRae and Dominic Moore were incredibly impressed with the standard of entries. The future of songwriting is safe.
