MEGA GALLERY: DioSounds 2018

The 12th year of DioSounds was a year of firsts as 13 secondary schools performed in the musical showcase last Thursday, 21 June, at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre.

This year’s theme was “Heavenly Legends”, with each school paying tribute to musicians who have passed away but whose music remains.

Over 500 students performed, with debut performances from students of St Dominic’s Centre, Mayfield, who performed for the first time in an inclusive choir with students from San Clemente High School, Mayfield.

Principal Veronica McLoughlin said that “being included in DioSounds had given students the opportunity to experience a live performance in a supportive environment.”

Another first this year was the debut performance for St Bede’s Catholic College, Chisholm, as the initial cohort of Year 7 students took to the stage to groove to Marvin Gaye’s ‘Heard it through the grapevine’ and ‘How sweet it is’.

With the matinee audience of diocesan primary students, the theatre was roaring as each secondary school took to the stage. The audience clapped and sang along to familiar tunes as the MCs engaged the audience between performances.

“DioSounds has become an opportunity for music students to be creative and work closely with their teachers to explore their performing arts talents,” said Director of Schools, Dr Michael Slattery.

“The quality of performances is a true indication of the dedication of both students and staff and I congratulate all on their efforts.”
