Glowing in red, it sends an important message – we stand in unity with, and are praying for, people who are persecuted for their faith.
It’s all part of Red November, an initiative of Aid to the Church in Need (ACN).
The annual event calls on dioceses and public offices around the world to draw attention to and pray for persecuted Christians and make present the sufferings of our modern-day saints and martyrs.
It is an opportunity to stand in solidarity as the Body of Christ through prayer and action, united with our brothers and sisters in faith throughout the world.
“One of the primary international visuals of the initiative is the lighting of buildings in red, which reminds us of blood-stained martyrs and burned-down churches,” National Director of Aid to the Church in Need Australia & New Zealand Bernard Toutounji said.
“Their testimony and witness of faith challenges and inspires us to treasure and live out our own faith more deeply.”
Communities are encouraged to take time to acknowledge what’s happening worldwide due to worsening Christian persecution right across the globe.
People can support this initiative by attending any Masses or Prayer events held across Australia.
Locally, Red Wednesday will be commemorated at our 8.15am Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral tomorrow (20 November).
ACN is encouraging people to wear red and donate to their efforts to support Christian communities worldwide.
