How we are recognising NAIDOC Week 2024

The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle and CatholicCare Social Services Hunter-Manning will participate in a couple of NAIDOC community events in Newcastle.

To recognise NAIDOC Week, the Diocese is co-hosting an event with the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle.

Coinciding with National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday, all are welcome to attend this year’s Ecumenical Prayer Service.

The event will celebrate and honour the rich cultural heritage and contributions of our First Nations people.

When: Sunday 7 July, 1.45pm for 2pm start
Where: Christ Church Anglican Cathedral (Church Street, Newcastle)

The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is also participating in another NAIDOC community event in Newcastle alongside CatholicCare Social Services Hunter-Manning.

Hosted by Awabakal Ltd, the event starts at Civic Park with a flag raising at 9am, followed by a united procession to Foreshore Park.

From 10am at Foreshore Park, there will be a market-style event where several businesses, community groups, and individuals will host “stalls” to connect with the community and offer a variety of fun and free activities and information about local services.

The Diocese and CatholicCare are sponsors of this event and have their own stall there with information and activities. The team is excited to see everyone there! Details of the event are below:

When: Monday 8 July, 9am to 3pm
Where: Starts at Civic Park for a march, the rest of the day is hosted at Foreshore Park.

Both of these events will recognise this year’s theme - Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud.

It celebrates the unyielding spirit of our communities and invites all to stand in solidarity, amplifying the voices that have long been silenced.
