Thursday 14 July had been looming large in the minds of the 71 diocesan WYD pilgrims for some time. We had gathered numerous times to prepare for this journey and suddenly the day that had seemed so far away was here.

Students begin their World Youth Day journey
This morning, 16 students from the schools of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle diocese began their World Youth Day (WYD) journey.

The diocese’s 71 World Youth Day pilgrims’ countdown to departure is reaching fever pitch with ‘D Day’ on Thursday 14 July. For 27 days, pilgrims – spanning a broad age range – will walk in the footsteps of the saints and then make their way to Krakow. Here they will join thousands of pilgrims from all over the world in welcoming Pope Francis and eagerly listening to his words.
Diocese sends 71 disciples out to the world
Setting forth on pilgrimage has been a common practice for centuries. People, as an expression of their faith, have sought throughout time to transform themselves by journeying to sacred sites.
World Youth Day Pilgrims to be commissioned on Sunday
This Sunday at the 5pm Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral, the diocese’s 71 World Youth Day pilgrims will be blessed and commissioned by Dean of the Cathedral, Fr Andrew Doohan, and pilgrimage Chaplain, Fr Greg Barker, after their final formation and planning meeting.
Preparing spiritually for World Youth Day
Last night, with the wind raging outside, some words of the Divine Mercy Chaplet popped into my head. I had heard Fr Rob Galea’s version of this on Sunday at the formation session for World Youth Day pilgrims. The words, ‘For the sake of his sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world’, were the last thing I remember before falling asleep.
