This major crisis has been driven by large scale droughts, compounded by climate change, inflation and the ongoing conflict in some countries. Urgent assistance is needed now, to respond to those experiencing severe drought and food insecurity.
To have four countries simultaneously on the brink of famine is unprecedented. As followers of Christ we are compelled to respond and act when our sisters and brothers are suffering, recognising Christ in those without food. “…Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me…” (Matthew 25:34-35)
The global Caritas network is providing emergency assistance to the people who are the most affected. Local and international Caritas partner agencies are on the ground providing water and food items such as beans, sugar, salt, oil and maize flour.
