Fifteen young football hopefuls representing the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle recently put their skills to the test at this year’s State Catholic Polding AFL trials.

The trials saw Catholic primary school students from across northern and western New South Wales travel to Tulkaba Park in Terabla to try and secure their spot in this year’s Polding AFL team.

Our 15 players went head to head with other students from Teralba, Broken Bay, Lismore, Bathurst, Armidale and Wilcannia Forbes.

Hearty congratulations to the six students who have been chosen to compete at the NSW Primary School Sports Association Championships at Batemans Bay in May.

The successful six were Joe Harrison from St Paul’s Primary School, Gateshead; Blake Dunn from St Mary’s Primary School, Warners Bay; Kasper Mole from St Joseph’s Primary School, Merewether; Rory Hodgson from St Joseph’s Primary School, East Maitland; Abe Russell from St Patrick’s Primary School, Lochinvar; and Zachery Yurisich from St Mary’s Primary School, Warners Bay.

Joe, Blake and Kasper impressed the selectors by winning a number of contested possessions around the packs, Rory turned heads with his consistently high marks throughout the trial, and Zachery caught the selectors’ eyes with their silky skills and impressive speed.

Well done all!
