What a waterful life - Primary and Secondary students make a splash at the 2023 Diocesan Swimming Championships

Last week saw the end of the school swimming pathway in NSW. It has been an outstanding year for our Primary and Secondary school swimmers.

This Year's Primary and Secondary Diocesan Swimming Championships were held at the Forum where students from across all 6 regions performed outstandingly, showcasing their skill and smashing their PBs.

The following swimmers had a busy program for the NSW Catholic Primary School Swimming Championships at Sydney Olympic Park after qualifying for five or more events:

  • Mackinley Griffin - St Columba’s, Adamstown
  • William Ryan - St Catherine’s, Singleton
  • Patrick Holz St Catherine’s, Singleton
  • Quin Neyland - St Catherine’s, Singleton
  • Georgia Pitfield - St Columba’s, Adamstown
  • Charlize Eldridge - St Aloysius, Chisholm
  • Sienna Compton - St Aloysius, Chisholm

At the NSWCPS Championships at SOPAC there were some superb swims from our primary students as follows:

  • Quin Neyland: 1st in 50m butterfly, 2nd in 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 4th in 200m individual medley
  • Mackinley Griffin: 1st in breaststroke, 2nd in 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle and 200m individual medley.
  • Sienna Compton: 1st in 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke
  • Caleb Hyslop: 1st in 50m breaststroke and 2nd in 50m freestyle
  • Mary Taggart: 1st in 50m butterfly, 3rd in 50m freestyle and 200m individual medley
  • William Ryan: 2nd in 50m backstroke, 3rd in 50m breaststroke, 4th in 50m freestyle and butterfly
  • Hamish Carmichael: 2nd in 50m breaststroke and 3rd in backstroke
  • Ava Kent: 2nd in 200m individual medley and 3rd in 50m backstroke

Other swimmers to finish in the top 6 at Polding included:

The St Catherine’s girls relay team performed outstandingly, placing third while the junior boys finished in sixth. The St Mary’s Warners Bay senior boys placed third.  

The following students from the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese qualified for the NSWPSSA Championships:

Isobel Smith qualified for the final, going on to win the eight years 50m freestyle with a time of 38:96.

Quin Neyland made the final in four events, finally taking out the 100m freestyle with the impressive time of 1:03:21. She also placed third in the 50m freestyle, fifth in backstroke and ninth in butterfly.

Mackinley Griffen placed third in the 50m breaststroke final with a time of 36:94 and placed fifth in the 200m individual medley.

Sienna Compton excelled in the multiclass, placing first in the 50m breaststroke (53:24), backstroke (45:87), freestyle (37:19) and butterfly (42:92). Sienna’s brother placed fifth in the 50m freestyle final.

The Diocese strongest secondary swimmers competed last term, showcasing their talent and skill.

Eva Potts from St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead qualified for seven events in the NSWCCC Championships. She broke the 50m and 100m 15Yrs Freestyle records and went on the break the previous record set by Meg Bailey, a highly accomplished swimmer within our Diocese, in the 100m event. Eva also broke a record made by J Webb in 1998 for the 50m 15yrs freestyle.

Spencer Hamilton broke Oliver Moody’s record in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 31.81.

The St Francis Xavier’s College open medley relay team broke the ASC Maitland record with a time of 2.04.57.

St Mary’s Gateshead Intermediate Girls broke a record with a time of 2.02.00 in the 200m freestyle relay.

Eva Potts and Emily Jack from St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead and Matilda Smith from SFX, Hamilton qualified for an impressive seven events at the NSWCCC Championships.

  • Lachlan Webster: 1st in the 50m freestyle, 3rd in 100m freestyle, 4th in 100m butterfly and 6th in 50m butterfly
  • Theodore McFadden: 2nd in 50m backstroke, 4th in 50m freestyle, 5th in 50m breaststroke & 6th in the 50m butterfly
  • Emily Jack: 1st in 100m butterfly, 2nd in 50m butterfly, 4th in 400m freestyle, 5th in 200m individual medley and 50m backstroke
  • Sophie Scislo: 3rd in 200m freestyle & 100m butterfly, 5th in 50m backstroke and butterfly
  • Matilda Smith: 3rd in 400m freestyle, 4th in 50m breaststroke and backstroke, 4th in 200m individual medley
  • Levi Reynolds: 5th in the 100m backstroke, 6th in the 50m breaststroke
  • Dominik Traub-Rehm: 2nd in 100m butterfly, 5th in 200m freestyle and 6th in 100m backstroke

Emily Jack won silver at the NSW All Schools in the 200m butterfly, 5th in the 100m butterfly and 6th in both the 50m butterfly and 400m individual medley.

  • Sebastian Webster: 3rd in the 50m breaststroke and 5th in 100m freestyle
  • Eva Potts: 4th in the 50m backstroke, 5th in the 50m freestyle, 6th in the 100m freestyle and 7th in the 50m butterfly
  • Matilda Smith: 5th in 400m individual medley and 6th in the 200m individual medley
  • Valentina Ward finished 5th in the 50m breaststroke
  • Dominik Traub Rehm: 6th in the 200m butterfly
