DR MICHAEL SLATTERY: Anzac Day

This week we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service.

The spirit of Anzac, with its qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.

The Anzac legend is also important because it encourages Australians to remember the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their country. The legend has made such an impression on Australians that we continue to commemorate the landing of the ANZAC soldiers on the shores of Gallipoli on 25 April each year.

The aim of gathering for the Anzac Day marches is to give participating veterans and the general public an opportunity to honour those who served in the defence of Australia or its interests, especially remembering those who paid the supreme sacrifice or otherwise suffered as a result of their service.

We keep peace at the forefront of our prayers this week, especially given the tensions exhibited throughout the various regions of the world.
