St Mary's Rugby League star

St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead student, Mitchell Black has been signed by the Newcastle Knights to pursue his Rugby League career.

Mitchell previously played junior Rugby League for the Taree Panthers and the Taree Bulls until 2018 when he moved to Newcastle to follow his Rugby dreams.

Mitchell enrolled at St Mary’s Gateshead in 2018 and has dedicated himself to four days a week 3-hour training sessions, Rugby League on Saturday/Sunday and completing his HSC.

This year, Mitchell’s natural Rugby League ability saw him selected in the Under 18’s NSW Origin Team chosen from the SG Ball Under 18’s NRL competition. He played a pivotal role in the NSW’s game against Queensland Origin Team in the curtain raiser for State of Origin 1 in Brisbane. He also captained the NSW Combined Catholic College’s team.

His talent and dedication to Rugby League has further been rewarded by his selection in the Australian Schoolboys Team for 2019, who will play a one-off test match against New Zealand Schoolboys at Redcliff on 29 September. This selection came after Mitchell attended the Australian Championships with the NSW Combined Catholic College’s Team.

Mitchell is now training with Jersey Flegg Under 20’s Knights and is on a two year contract with the Newcastle Knights while completing his final year of schooling.

Mitchell looks to have made the right move to Newcastle and this humble young man has certainly got a bright future ahead.

The Diocese is very proud of him.
