2024 HSC Success

For more than 57,000 students across New South Wales, Wednesday 18 December 2024, was a milestone moment, marking the culmination of years of dedication and perseverance with the highly anticipated release of their HSC results.

Amongst the high achievers was Anya Bacic Wilson from St Francis Xavier’s Catholic College, Hamilton. As the 2024 College dux, Anya exceeded her own expectations with an outstanding ATAR of 97.05, earning Distinguished Achiever status in English Advanced, Biology, Legal Studies, and Religion (2 Unit).

"I was over the moon! My estimated ATAR throughout the year was around 96, but I would’ve been thrilled with anything above 90," Anya shared.

Despite securing early entry to study law at both the University of Technology Sydney and Macquarie University, Anya remained committed to completing the HSC with distinction.

“This was about proving to myself that I could do it. I didn’t want to rely solely on early entry. I wanted to know I achieved this on my own, and I’m so proud of myself for that.”

Hoping for a post HSC epiphany that did not eventuate, Anya is torn weighing up her options for 2025; starting university or taking a gap year to travel.

"I really want to travel. I’m Croatian, and my Baba (grandfather) is determined to take me to Europe next year."

Faith Rafferty from St Joseph’s College, Lochinvar, also celebrated exceptional results, achieving an ATAR of 96.3, surpassing her original goal of 95. Faith earned Distinguished Achiever status in Chemistry, Advanced Mathematics, Studies of Religion (2 Unit), and Entertainment Industry.

“When I first saw the number on the screen I was pretty blown away. I achieved the number that I wanted to achieve, so it was a relief.”

Although Faith had already secured an early offer to study Media and Communications at the University of Newcastle, she remained determined to give her all throughout the HSC.

“I know some people ease off after getting early entry, but my advice is to keep going,” Faith said. “You’ve come this far, give it your all, and you might surprise yourself with what you can achieve.”

Faith is now relishing in some downtime with loved ones before beginning university in late February.

Ashton Blake of St Joseph’s Catholic College, Aberdeen achieved an impressive ATAR of 96.7 and Distinguished Achiever status in Extension 1 Mathematics. Despite securing an early offer to study Advanced Mathematics, Ashton stayed committed to his goal of studying Medicine at the University of Newcastle.

“A lot of people switch off after trials, especially if they’ve secured early entry, but it’s important to keep working. Your results can change significantly in those final weeks.”

Having grown up in the country, Ashton is eagerly looking forward to the vibrant change of pace and new surroundings as he prepares to begin university life.
“I’m looking forward to the independence and experiencing life in a new environment. It’s going to be a big change, but an exciting one.”

For future HSC students, Anya, Faith and Ashton all stressed the importance of balance, perseverance and seeking support when needed.

“You have to balance study with a social life 100%,” Anya advised.

All three students agreed that early entry offers should not be seen as a reason to relax. Anya highlighted the invaluable role of teachers.

“Utilise your teachers as they’re there to help you. I couldn’t have done it without  our teachers at SFX; they were absolutely amazing.”

Congratulations to the Class of 2024 on their outstanding achievements, and best wishes to the Class of 2025 as they embark on their own journey.
