Crossing Cultures: Hidden Histories inspires connection and shared learning

Late last month dozens of people took a step back in time during a guided journey through 65,000 years of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history.

Local parishioners, community members, and some Diocesan Clergy, alongside Bishop Michael Kennedy, gathered at the Therry Centre in East Maitland for the inspiring day.

Crossing Cultures: Hidden Histories was organised by the Listen to the Voice: Moving Forward Team from the Maitland Catholic Region and facilitated by Aunty Louise Campbell and Craig Duncan from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education and Wellbeing Unit at the Catholic Schools Office.

They explored artwork depicting Indigenous history and reflected on how they might feel if this had been their history. They also examined ways to achieve reconciliation, peace, and justice in their communities.

Richard Campbell, a member of the Stolen Generation, addressed the group, reflecting on his story and artworks.

One of the event organisers, Helen Belcher said it was an incredible event full of learning.

“It was fantastic and inspiring to see how many people were looking for information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture and their willingness to engage with [the community] to achieve reconciliation, justice, and peace,” she said.

“Aunty Louise Campbell and Craig Duncan were excellent facilitators and very generous with their time and commitment to assisting parishes in this journey.”

She strongly encourages other regions of our Diocese to host similar days.
