Retreat to bring young people together

“By growing closer to each other, we can grow closer to God.”

Elizabeth Symington October 04, 2022

That’s a statement from Diocesan Council for Ministry with Young People (DCMYP) member Daniel Lee. He is sharing those words to encourage young people to get involved with youth ministry.

Since moving to Australia in 2019, he’s found comfort in knowing he had people to turn to who are on similar journeys.

“There is a growing group of young people in our Diocese, and they have been a good source of support since I moved here,” he said.

“I am passionate about youth ministry because I see myself in others.

“I’ve walked a similar path to many others so I can help them and journey with them to share different ideas, thoughts and perspectives and they can do the same for me.”

Daniel encourages anyone who is interested to become part of their community.

“Come along and give youth ministry a chance,” Daniel said.

“It is easy to be of faith when you are surrounded by people with faith – you can do it alone, but it is much more difficult.”

He says an event this month could be the perfect introduction to youth ministry.

On Saturday 29 October, the DCMYP is hosting a weekend retreat with Br Damien Price.

Br Damien is an Edmund Rice Christian Brother who is passionate about the power of story and how it can unite us.

On Saturday he will host Encounter the Heart of the Shepherd from 9.30am until 5pm. The following day, Br Damien will deliver The Smell of the Sheep, where he will reflect on vision and strategy.

Daniel is hoping the retreat will help him reflect on some decisions he needs to make around attending World Youth Day and life in general.

“I hope it gives me a direction in where I should be going,” he said.

“I am also excited to come together with other young people who are interested in sharing their faith.”
