Circle of security

Parenting can be one of life’s biggest joys, but that does not mean it is always easy.

Recognising this, CatholicCare Social Services Hunter-Manning (CatholicCare) is conducting a six-week course for parents involved in their Brighter Futures program, focusing on developing relationships with children that build optimal emotional support.

Central to the program will be the Circle of Security map, which helps parents and carers to follow children’s relationship needs and provides guidance on how to become more emotionally available to them.

“The Circle of Security map draws a very clear link between attachment and learning,” CatholicCare Early Interventions Operations Manager, Maryanne Kerrins, said.

The founders of the Circle of Security model developed the program based on decades of university research. They report that secure children exhibit increased empathy, greater self-esteem, better relationships with parents and peers, enhanced school readiness and an increased capacity to handle emotions more effectively when compared with children who are not secure.

“CatholicCare’s experienced parent educators are enthused to be delivering the Circle of Security program in the Taree community,” Ms Kerrins said.

“We understand that just as every child is different, so too are their parents. When delivering the course our staff will be there to provide suggestions to parents and carers on how to overcome challenges and embrace opportunities in line with their families’ beliefs. Our aim is to enhance parents’ existing skills,” Ms Kerrins said.

CatholicCare’s Circle of Security course commences on 2 November and will take place at CatholicCare’s Taree offices.
