Ray began as a groundsmand at St Joseph's Catholic College, Aberdeen in April 1986 and officially concluded his tenure at the end of the September school holidays. His departure marks the end of an era for the St Joseph’s community, where his work has left a lasting impact on the grounds and community.

Ray’s contributions have been monumental, transforming the grounds into an environment of beauty admired by all who visit. Many parents, including ex-students, remember Ray fondly for his tireless dedication. Until recently, he was solely responsible for the school’s gardens and grounds, which have consistently drawn praise for their exceptional quality.

Hired by then-principal Kevin Kime, Ray came highly recommended by Mrs. Lesley Shipman’s father, who described him as “Salt of the Earth, honest as the day is long, and you’ll never find a better worker.”

Over the years, Ray worked under six principals, consistently demonstrating quiet dedication and reliability, never taking a single sick day across the entirety of his career.

In 2004, Ray’s exceptional work was formally recognised when he received the Monsignor Coolahan Award for School Service. Nominated by St Joseph’s staff, Ray was celebrated for being a “hardworking, committed, and industrious groundsman” with a kind demeanour.

“Rain, hail, or shine, he is here, with purpose and energy abounding,”

To honor his incredible contribution, Ray was treated to a special luncheon during the school holidays, attended by long-standing staff members and former colleagues, including John Tobin and Robert Holstein.

Principal Veronica Rolfe expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the St Joseph’s community saying, “Thank you, Ray, for your unwavering dedication to our school. Your work has made an indelible mark on St Joseph’s, and we wish you a long, relaxing, and well-deserved retirement.”

Ray Charlton’s legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations at St Joseph’s as they enjoy the beautiful surroundings he worked so hard to create.
