The STEM MAD National Showcase is a celebration of student learning designed to acknowledge and promote STEM learning initiatives that address real-world problems so students can “Make A Difference” (MAD) in the world by acting for justice and the common good through the papal call for action in Laudato Si': On Care for our Common Home.
Five Year 6 students from St Benedict's Primary School, Edgeworth and three Year 10 students from St Catherine’s Catholic College, Singleton showcased their STEM projects alongside other students who had travelled to Brisbane from Catholic schools around Australia.
The teams all had a fantastic time sharing their projects and learning with students and diocesan representatives Australia-wide. They also participated in a variety of hands-on workshops and listened to some keynote speakers with various STEM focused initiatives.
Three additional teams from St Bede’s Catholic College, Chisholm; St Paul’s Primary School, Gateshead and an additional team from St Catherine’s Catholic College, Singleton participated in an online showcase with two of those teams walking away with awards.
St Bede's Catholic College, Chisholm - Aleah Kripp, Abigail Anderberg, Sophie Meehan, Angelique Currey and supported by their teacher Liane Buckley, won the Social Justice Secondary award for their project “Litter Loot”.
St Catherine’s Catholic College Singleton - Nina Boticki, Pranvi Moksha Babulal Prem Chand Saraswathy, Tahlia Ellis and supported by their teachers Aaron Campbell and Courtney Buxton won a People’s Choice Award for their project “The OPTIC”.
