Historic Maitland classrooms get a makeover

Renovations to 164-year-old classrooms will enable St John the Baptist Primary School, Maitland to cater for its growing community.

Alexander Foster August 03, 2020

St John currently hosts 315 students, but this number is expected to increase over the coming years and it is anticipated that by the end of 2021, each year group will be double-streamed, requiring a total of 14 classrooms.

To accommodate this growth, the school will renovate the original Kindergarten classrooms from 1856, which had fallen into disrepair after a flood swept the area in 1955.

Dubbed “the old building” by staff and students, the newly refurbished block will feature modern, light and airy classrooms for Year 1 students.

The renovations are funded by a grant awarded to St John in 2016 with the school’s rapid growth in mind.

The new classrooms are expected to be completed within the coming weeks, with final detailing currently under way.
