Our schools bust the dust

Students from across the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle joined more than 250 schools from throughout Australia rain dancing to #BustTheDust last Friday at 1pm.

The initiative came from St John’s Parish Primary School in Trangie, Central West NSW, who wanted to raise awareness of drought-affected areas in its community.

St John’s extended an invite to all schools throughout Australia to join it in busting a dance move at the same time and then uploading the video online.

#BustTheDust’s dancing for rain was a great enterprise to show support for rural areas affected by drought.

St Joseph’s Primary School, Merriwa

St Joseph’s Primary School, Merriwa is one of many schools in the Diocese that jumped on board to support efforts to raise awareness of the plight of rural schools and drought- affected communities.

The school is no stranger to the effects of the drought and its impact on the town and the families within it, so naturally, it was very supportive, and the students were keen to bust a move.

Rosary Park Catholic School, Branxton

Students and staff at Rosary Park Catholic School, Branxton took part in the initiative to raise spirits in drought-stricken communities by participating in the collective rain dance to “Bust the Dust”.

This initiative was sparked by a video that went viral from 19 students at St John's Parish and has created great awareness across the country for drought-affected areas.

St Joseph’s Primary School, Denman

Students and teachers from St Joseph’s Primary School, Denman joined hundreds of students to dance for rain.

Drought and now bushfires are affecting all of the Upper Hunter as well as many regions across Australia. The thick pall of smoke engulfing the school, the sound of sirens racing past the gate as well as the dust blowing off the surrounding paddocks in the ceaseless winds are stark reminders that all is not well in the bush.

Being a school focused on Visible Wellbeing, St Joseph’s was immediately on board when it saw the St John’s students from Trangie’s call to action.

Teachers and students alike had smiles from ear to ear as they danced together. When the camera was turned off they demanded another go “as that was just a warm up”.

“Bust the Dust” is another example of the resilience of students. Well done to the students of St John’s and well done to all the school communities that joined the dance.

The St Joseph’s School community in the Upper Hunter region wishes everyone a happy, holy Christmas and may your 2020 year be positively wet.

St James’ Primary School, Muswellbrook

Principal of St James’ Primary School, Muswellbrook, Aaron Moon said the school is committed to the needs of its community.

“We wanted to get involved in this cause and join with the students of St John’s in Trangie,” he said.
