On Wednesday 30 October, St Mary's conducted a Talk-and-Walk-a-Thon, which provided an opportunity for students to not only engage in physical activity, but also to engage in discussions and build connections with their fellow students.
Older students were paired with younger students, allowing them to get to know each other better and build relationships within their school community. There were some great conversations going on as the children walked and talked.
“The Talk-and-Walk-a-Thon is a platform to help our school build a stronger peer network and more positive culture by recognising the experiences of others and practising the skills of communication,” said assistant principal Genevieve Cook.
This was the first time St Mary's has run the event, but after what began as a low-key exercise, the school is now keen to run the Talk-and-Walk-a-Thon each year.
Teachers have also been encouraged to incorporate the idea into their physical education and lesson break times during the term.
"It is often through everyday interactions that relationships are developed, and connections are formed,” Ms Cook said. “At St Mary's, we value the power of personal, face-to-face connection.
“By holding a Talk-and-Walk-a-Thon, we aimed to give our students an opportunity to communicate on a range of topics, from experiences to hobbies, with peers they may not have talked to before.
“It is in these small and simple connections that belonging and wellbeing are found, and if nurtured, can flourish.”
