During their time at the Kitchen, the students served meals, made cups of coffee and cleaned away plates - all with a smile and a sense of purpose.

What was so heart-warming were the opportunities to stand back and watch these students just sit with people and talk to them – they were genuine, they were real and they were compassionate.

I honestly believe our captains, the other volunteers and the diners really got something positive out of the day. To say I am an incredibly proud Principal is an understatement.

I am a big believer that we must teach all of our students to serve others, to be servant leaders and this service confirms what St James’ does within the school and parish community.

St James’ aims to instil within students the Gospel values attributed to service – commitment, caring, concern, involvement, empathy and almsgiving. These are important to develop within a caring and supportive community.

As Mother Teresa said, “Love cannot remain by itself – it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service.”

Following this visit, the Year 6 students have committed to volunteering time at the Red Door Community Kitchen each month for the next year.
