The Science and Engineering Challenge is a nationwide STEM outreach program presented by the University of Newcastle in partnership with communities, Rotary clubs, universities and sponsors.

Throughout the challenge, students experienced aspects of science and engineering which they would not usually see in their everyday school environment. Students had the opportunity to engage in fellowship and meet other school teams.

The challenge runs a range of programs but focuses on inspiring students in Year 10 to consider a future career in science and engineering by choosing to study the enabling sciences and mathematics in Years 11 and 12.

Eight winning schools from each state competed in a series of challenging STEM activities in the final rounds of the competition between more than 700 schools and 100 event days held around the country over the past year.

After an intense day of competition, St Peter’s scored the winning result of 1174.15, coming out champions and winners of the National Final for 2017.

Principal, Bernard Burgess said, "The dedication to preparation and the competition, of these 40 students from Years 9 and 10 and their teachers, Mrs Vicki Grogan-Griffin and Mr Ken Jordan was exemplary! Our whole college community can be rightfully proud of these high achievers and their pursuit of excellence as creative thinkers and doers!
