Students achieve success at NSWCCC Athletics Championships
On Friday 15 September, talented athletes from secondary schools across the diocese competed in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Athletics Championships at Homebush.
The event attracted families and schools from as far as Lismore, Armidale, Bathurst, Wilcannia-Forbes, Broken Bay, Canberra-Goulburn, Parramatta, Wollongong, Wagga Wagga, Sydney and Maitland-Newcastle.
Our diocese performed strongly in both track and field events achieving the following results:
Torrie Lewis from St Mary’s, Gateshead won the 12yrs 100m and 200m
Ebony Newton from St Peter’s, Maitland came second in the 12yrs 100m and 200m, first in the 12yrs hurdles and third in the long jump
Hannah Cullen from St Pius X, Adamstown came 3rd in the 16yrs 400m
Victoria Allen from St Peter’s, Maitland won gold in the 16yrs hurdles
Emily Whelan from St Francis Xavier’s College, Hamilton won gold in the 17yrs hurdles. Emily also won the 17+ high jump clearing 1.70m
Dakota Thomas from St Paul’s, Booragul won silver in the 16yrs shotput and bronze in the long jump
Lily Cain from St Mary’s, Maitland won silver in the 17+ long jump
Taylah Bryde from St Pius X, Adamstown came 2nd in the 15yrs shotput and discus
Eliza Forsayth from St Clare’s, Taree came 3rd in 12yrs discus
Sarah Dal Molin from St Pius X, Adamstown came 3rd in the 13yrs javelin
Chelsea Goodhew from St Paul’s, Booragul came 2nd in 1500m walk
James Ajayi from St Pius X, Adamstown came 3rd in 14yrs 100m
Fletcher Thompson from St Joseph’s College, Lochinvar came 2nd in 12yrs 200m
Leroy Reid from St Mary’s, Gateshead came 2nd in the 15yrs 200m and 400m and 1st in the long jump
Joseph O’Connor from St Mary’s, Maitland came 3rd in the 17+ 1500m
Geelan Cohen from St Mary’s, Gateshead came 3rd in the 16yrs high jump and 2nd in the long jump
Tim Ryan from St Catherine’s, Singleton came 3rd in the 15yrs shot
Joshua Argall from St Clare’s, Taree came 2nd in the 17+ shotput and discus and 3rd in the javelin
Travis Petersen from St Pius X, Adamstown won silver in the 14yrs discus
Thomas Webster from St Paul’s, Booragul had a great day coming 3rd in the 100m and 200m multi class, 2nd in the long jump and 1st in the shotput.
The Diocese also did very well in the relays winning gold in the junior girls, the intermediate boys and bronze in the junior boys.
To top off a fantastic day of competing, the Diocese had 3 athletes named as Age Champions – Ebony Newton, Emily Whelan and Leroy Reid. These are outstanding young athletes, ones to watch in the future.
