Upper Hunter success for St Joseph’s cattle show team

On Friday 31 March, 18 members of the cattle show team brought home outstanding success for St Joseph’s Primary School, Denman at the Upper Hunter Show.

The students competed in a Junior Judging and Cattle Parading competition with our school heifer, Betty, also competing in the Heifer Class. Coming away with a win, Betty impressed the judges with her muscle tone and conformation.

Ten students also competed in the Primary Cattle Parading competition showcasing their skills and passion for livestock.

With only one animal entered for the show, the students were lucky enough to borrow steers from St Joseph’s High School, Aberdeen.

With little to no experience with these animals, the students did a tremendous job and were able to demonstrate the skills they have been learning over the last 12 to 18 months.

Outstanding achievements were received by the following students:

All of our students contested in the Junior Judging. The students were instructed to place four steers in order based on their breed characteristics, structure and carcass quality.

They also had to answer four questions based on their observations of the animal where they demonstrated their knowledge and interest to learn.

Our new members of the cattle show team this year, David Caruana and Caylie Edwards, impressed the judges with their oral presentation, making it through to the final round of Junior Judging. The pair were the only primary students selected to speak in the finals and competed against six other high school students.

Overall, it was a fantastic day for everyone and our students loved the experience. A huge thank you goes to all of our sponsors, as well as Michael-Lee and Chris Freeman for transporting Betty to and from the Show.

The team will now have a break until July when our steers return to the school.
