Anne Sheppard and Veronica McLoughlin did not meet until the beginning of this year, but they have quickly formed a close friendship, professionally and personally. Both grew up in loving family environments and followed the usual pattern: school, work, study, marriage and children. But what makes them different is that Anne is profoundly deaf.

When a couple falls in love, the decision to marry in the Church is not taken lightly. It is a sacrament where they pledge their love to each other and God. During the wedding ceremony, the couple promises that their vow will keep them together “until death do us part”. But few could possibly realise on that day that their years together would last a remarkable 70 years.

Eighteen years ago, my life took a sudden shattering change when I was severely injured in a car accident. At the time I couldn’t possibly believe that there were any positives to come from this disaster. Luckily I was mistaken. Today, I endeavour to raise awareness and improve the lives of others who struggle with their dilemmas, to seek a fair go for all.
