What on earth is a silent disco?

Imagine walking into a room. The energy is electric. People are smiling and engaging with one another. Everyone around you is dancing. Dancing in rhythm to the music… but the only audible sounds are those of feet tapping on the timber floor.

What is this scenario I am explaining? A silent disco of course!

In celebration of Youth Week 2017, CatholicCare is joining forces with Cessnock City Council to host two silent discos for youth in the local community.

Silent discos are a unique way of experiencing live music. Guests wear wireless headphones and a silent atmosphere instantly transforms into a high energy musical performance. When the silent disco headphones are on, participants have the choice between three channels of music and the sound is crisp and clear anywhere in the venue.

“The purpose of the silent disco is to provide young people with an opportunity to engage with others in their local community and to have fun,” Early Intervention Caseworker at CatholicCare Social Services Hunter-Manning, Deborah Magee, said.

“CatholicCare is excited to be contributing to the social interaction of young people in the Cessnock and Greta areas, via a silent disco, to encourage connection (the theme of Youth Week 2017).

“Dance promotes movement, which can improve a sense of wellbeing, social and cultural inclusion.

“As a provider of Child, Youth and Family Services, CatholicCare views Youth Week as an opportunity to introduce the community to our programs and inform on ways we may be able to assist local families.

“We expect around 100 youth to come along and get involved in the discos, everyone is welcome. Our hope is that they have a great time through experiencing the joy of movement and make some new friends,” Deborah said.
