"Celebrating Carers" luncheon

Last week CatholicCare joined in the annual NSW Foster Care Week celebrations for kids, carers and agencies in NSW.

This year we celebrated the hard work and commitment of our carers by inviting them to a special luncheon at Club Macquarie in Argenton. More than 30 carers joined staff in the celebrations held last Thursday. We hope the day was made more relaxing for carers by providing childcare for 20 children at the venue.

As always there was plenty of chatter and laughter as carers caught up with each other to share stories, meet new carers and see the little ones as they grow up. Hearing feedback from each table about 5 things we have in common was insightful and funl! We hope everyone enjoyed the lucky door prizes.

Robyn Donnelly was our guest speaker this year and she gave an informative and entertaining talk about Strengthening Relationships. Carers and staff reflected on the realisation that one negative statement requires 5 positive statements to balance it! Let’s all keep remembering the importance of responding to the ‘bids’ that those around us make. This is relevant for all of us to keep our relationships strong. If you are interested to learn more refer to the work of Gottman, The Sound Relationship House and the 5 Languages of Love.

Celebrations were capped off by acknowledging and thanking our wonderful carers who do so much to support other carers in a volunteer capacity including the facilitators of the independent support groups in Maitland, Newcastle and Maryland as well as the peer mentors who provide one-to-one support for carers. We value the support you offer to other carers – you do make a difference!

For those who couldn’t join us on the day, we want to extend our thanks for all you do to make a positive impact on children and young people in care.
