GALLERY: San Clemente Reunion

A pleasantly sunny day greeted us with warmth for our luncheon with Sister Margaret Gannon OP (known to this group as Sister Agnes). Many had not met each other, let alone Sister, for many years.

We studied at San Clemente College, Mayfield, spanning a period from 1955 to 1963, during which Sister was our teacher, then became Principal. Currently living in Sydney, we were thrilled Sister could join us, so immediately extended an invitation for other "old girls" to come along and swell our numbers.

Soon the warmth of the day was surpassed by the warm greetings of former school friends who recognised each other’s face but often struggled with an elusive name. But our memories were no match for Sister’s amazingly accurate recollection, saying, "just give me your first name", followed by her promptly supplying our maiden name.

Colleen Canny welcomed Sister and students then Sister offered Grace before our delicious meal at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club at Wickham. Such a picturesque venue created a relaxed atmosphere for many reminiscences, laughter and warm camaraderie. Of course, a room full of chattering ladies caused quite a hum until Sister used her secret weapon and instantly gained our attention. All Dom students will recall those magical wooden “clackers”. We loved it and gave her a round of applause.

After lunch, Sister led us in singing the hymn to Saint Dominic which sounded quite tuneful, although I may be a little biased. Then Sister eagerly explained that “from 7 November 2015 to 21 January 2017 the Dominican Order throughout the world celebrates 800 years.” Thousands of friars, nuns, sisters and lay Dominicans are spread across 111 countries. The Pope will officiate at the opening and closing ceremonies for this significant anniversary. Already a memorial lapel pin is available featuring Dominican colours of black and white plus a flame representing the Saint’s work, "to spread the Gospel flame".
