It's not goodbye, it's see you soon

The Feast of Christ the King saw the end of an era at Sugarloaf Parish when Fr Peter Rees concelebrated his final Mass as parish priest with Bishop Bill Wright and Fr John Vien Vo.

Holy Cross Church at Glendale had standing room only for this wonderful celebration. It was a moving experience that began with Fr John leading a group of young parishioners in a Vietnamese drumming welcome.

Fr Peter, as always, delivered an amazing homily and following the celebration of Eucharist, two students from St Benedict’s Primary School at Edgeworth, Jessica and Kristen Copeland, presented a beautiful Vietnamese liturgical movement.

Bishop Bill reflected on how privileged the parish community was to have Fr Peter minister for so long amongst them.

“It’s a ministry he should be proud of and with a full heart I wish him all the best, despite my resentment that he’s retired and I’m not,” said Bishop Bill.

While Fr Peter officially retired from his position as parish priest, he won’t be too far away as he will be living at West Wallsend and will still be a part of Sugarloaf Parish. We look forward to being able to involve Fr Peter in our school life here at St Benedict’s. He is an amazing man with a wealth of knowledge and our school community will thrive from his continued presence.

On behalf of the school community at St Benedict’s I wish Fr Peter every happiness in his retirement.
