St Mary’s Maitland celebrates 800 years of the Dominican Order

Our St Mary’s Community recognised the opening of the Jubilee Year of 800 years with celebration.

The festive Dominican Jubilee cake was cut by our most senior member, Sr Germaine, after Sr Janet’s few words of introduction.

We then formed a procession for a “symbolic pinning” of the Dominican 800 year pins, and received a booklet of proceedings of our home liturgy. Following Sr Pat’s reading of introduction, and an opening song, Sr Patsy lit the special candle.  Sr Colleen’s painting of St Dominic was the centrepiece. All recited the Jubilee Prayer, followed by Sr Helen Apthorpe’s reading from the Gospel of St Matthew. Our theme of thanks-giving was highlighted as the Sisters shared memories of significance from their personal journey towards and during their Dominican lives.  Intercessions were read individually by Srs Maureen, Ann, Janet, Helen Rankin and Marie. The Hymn of the Jubilee, which had been practised several times beforehand, was sung with enthusiasm.

A graciously prepared celebratory dinner, with all the trimmings, was enjoyed by everyone.

We all especially appreciated Sr Philomena and companions’ organisation and preparation of the liturgy.
