One growing dimension of contemporary Church life is the rise of lay leadership. As fewer and fewer parishes have resident parish priests to minister, the People of God are stepping up and ministering to each other and the wider community. A number of diocesan communities have embraced the model of lay leadership and all that it involves: discernment, formation, teamwork, trust in each other and the model − and lots of prayer!
Morisset Parish is blessed to have a Leadership Team of seven, with Fr Geoff Mulhearn as Moderator. Recently three Team members had the opportunity to share something of their personal stories on 1233, ABC Newcastle radio.
As regular 1233 listeners know, “It’s a phone, in a box. It can and will travel. Every morning it rings, and if you answer it, you tell your story on the radio, like hundreds have done before you.”
In turn, Daphne Peterson, Therese Dawson and Uta France answered the story box phone recently and told engaging stories. It would be fair to say that while the stories were very different, struggle and hope were intermingled in each. To this regular listener, it was evident that if Daphne, Therese and Uta bring to the Morisset Lay Leadership Team the same determination, resilience and optimism they have brought to other aspects of their lives, Morisset Parish is in good hands!
