Renowned researcher to open Family Faith Forum

Just who are we ministering to when we prepare children for the sacraments of initiation?

Dr Ruth Powell will bring over 20 years of research and experience to bear as she answers this question for the catechists, priests and teachers who gather to explore family faith at a forum in May. The Director of the National Church Life Survey and Associate Professor of the Australian Catholic University, Ruth has co-authored publications such as Winds of Change, Build My Church, Mission under the Microscope and Enriching Church Life.

Her opening address will set the tone for this groundbreaking forum as catechists, priests and teachers focus on the faith of families. Her address will profile Catholic families across the diocese by age, gender and education as well as their households and family information. She will also share research evidence as to the attitudes, practices and beliefs of many congregations, all of which will provide a solid foundation for what follows throughout the forum.

As the diocese embarks on a new era of faith formation with the launch of the policy Becoming Disciples – Sacraments of Initiation for Children it is appropriate to renew our understanding of the families we seek to serve. The Family Faith Forum will explore how parishes can make the most of the opportunities provided by the sacramental preparation of children.
