St Mary’s Community Day at Myuna Bay

Year 9 students from St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead, recently embarked on their annual Community Day at Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre.

The theme for the day, ‘Challenge and Change’, reinforced what the students have been learning in Studies of Religion and PDHPE in terms of resilience, relationships, the power of the team and acceptance of difference and diversity.

All students approached the day with positive attitudes and a willingness to ‘have a go’ as many found themselves stepping outside their comfort zones.

There were a range of activities throughout the day including canoeing/kayaking, a giant swing, archery, a challenge course, rock climbing and BMX bike riding.

The Myuna Bay experience gave all students the opportunity to learn more about themselves and others in a naturally beautiful setting.

Working in teams at their various activities, they gave each other support and encouragement and it was great to witness the informal interactions that took place between friends. Many students also formed new friendships on the day as they worked with people they hadn’t spoken to before.

The values and attitudes learnt from this day will hopefully enhance the wellbeing of the students moving forward.

The day was supported by the assistance of many teachers including Mrs Hogan, Mr Millen, Mr Speirs, Mr Wakely, Mrs Dews and Mr Dollisson. Each involved themselves energetically with the activities and felt both a stronger bond with and between the students.
