First Lego League for St Joseph's Merewether

On Wednesday 29 November, Year 5 and 6 students from St Joseph’s Primary School, Merewether, travelled to compete in the annual Narrabeen regional First Lego League competition.

Held at Narrabeen High School in Sydney, the two teams consisted of Lachlan Collins, Jack Breasley, Lachlan Gorfine, Kate Burgess and Flynn Vickery (Team 1) and Sam Woods, Harry Betts, Noah Gidley, Ashanya Weerasinghe, Sophia Darney, Olivia Wildschut, Zaneth Molina, Jasmine Alston and Sam Horn (Team 2).

The competition involved three rounds including 'core values', the 'research project' and the 'robot game'. The topic for the missions in the robot game and the project itself was hydrodynamics - finding a problem in the way we store, transport, use or find water and fixing it.

“Competing in a team taught me teamwork and how to work with people you may not know very well. It was a fun learning experience for everyone,” said one Year 5 student.

The Year 6 team used their skills and clever imagination to design a bubbler that wasted less water while the robot game involved the student’s having to design and program a robot to do missions on the game board.

Each team scored a series of points for each mission and were ranked accordingly throughout the day. The Year 6 team successfully scored 55 points, placing 12th overall, while the Year 5 team scored 45 placing 16th.
