GALLERY: Globally Called exhibition

This morning, Year 8 students from San Clemente High School, Mayfield, were chosen as ambassadors for Caritas Australia for the annual Globally Called exhibition.

Now in its third year, Globally Called is aimed at giving students the opportunity to be involved in an initiative that develops their 21st century skills, is connected to real life situations and is embedding our Catholic responsibility to act on social justice issues throughout the world.

During San Clemente’s centenary year, 180 student ambassadors set up Caritas stalls to educate the wider public of the significant work that Caritas is doing to show compassion to those in need.

Held in St Columban’s Hall, Mayfield, students have taken a step in the right direction, to do their part reaching out to the community.

“We want to make sure everyone knows that even a little bit can make a difference. We are selling delicious sweets to raise money and each stall has a Project Compassion box for donations”, said one student.

Their task is to educate others and share their knowledge of Caritas’ programs aimed at creating equality in the world. From the Philippines, Fiji, Vietnam, Timor-Leste and even Australia, students were proactive in their approach to raise awareness.

To achieve this, they researched why Caritas chooses to help other national and global communities, applied the Catholic Model for Social Justice and the Catholic Social Teachings and gain an understanding of how the programs implemented by Caritas are making a difference to these people’s lives.

“The significance of today is that we are able to merge two subjects as a cross-curricular initiative of, HSIE (Geography) and Religious Studies, to really grasp the importance of social justice throughout the world.

“It is wonderful opportunity for the students to put their learning into action. While they are gaining knowledge and content in class, they are able to apply that learning and put it into practice by educating the wider community,” said Religious Coordinator, Rose McAllister.
