Big hearts at St Benedict’s

Students Aimee Jo Feenan and Alani Tutt of St Benedict’s Primary School, Edgeworth, have shown true inspiration in their care for others, as Aimee raises funds for a water well project and Alani shares her hair for a good cause.

Aimee is a Year 6 student and part of the Mini Vinnies executive at St Bendict’s, having always shown great generosity throughout the years for each Mission effort.

I was thrilled to hear that Aimee had taken it upon herself to raise money to build a well for a community in Vietnam. Originally she suggested knocking on neighbourhood doors for donations and we thought the fundraising wouldn't be sustainable long term. So she got creative and came up with an idea of how should could reach more people and enrol them in her vision and that's how "Make A Mark by Aimee" came about.

Making hand created bookmarks and selling them to raise monies for the water well projects with Fr Peter Rees, Aimee has sold over 100 bookmarks across Australia, has employed a friend to help her and is really excited about sharing her wealth with the poor children who don't have clean drinking water.

Year 5 student, Alani is another amazing young lady that has shown great generosity.

On Saturday 5 November, Alani and her family joined hundreds of Novocastrians at Glendale Sports centre to participate in the Relay for Life, an event held annually to raise money for research into a cure for Cancer.

At this event there are a myriad of different activities and one of these is shave for a cure.

Alani chose to do something truly fearless and brave, shaving her head so she could donate her beautiful hair to Wigs for Kids who provide Hair Replacement Systems and support for children who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, Alopecia, Trichotillomania, burns and other medical issues at no cost to children or their families. Whilst Alani was nervous she was determined to give something that many of us take for granted.

As I watched the hairdresser chop off Alani’s plait I was moved to tears the heart felt generosity of someone so young to do something so brave was just awe inspiring. Through the generous donation of her hair to this charity Alani will ensure that other children look themselves and live their lives.

We are so proud of both the girls and their efforts!
