Hunter Beef Bonanza

On Friday 21 October, the St Catherine’s Catholic College Cattle Show Team attended the three-day annual Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza in Scone.

The team left with three out of the seven steers earning ribbons, which we were very happy with.

The steers that were sourced from the local area. Singleton and surrounds consistently produce very high quality commercial cattle and we are very lucky to have their generous support.

Saturday morning began with torrential rain which did not let up until late in the afternoon, however, all students worked tirelessly without complaint in the wet and mud to exhibit our steers.

The parading classes were very competitive, with around 800 students vying for a place in the finals.

For the first time, we had all three members of the Sternbeck family compete in their respective age groups: Max Sterbeck (Kindegarten), Amelia Sternbeck (Year 4) and Matilida-Jane Sternbeck (Year 7).

One of our youngest competitors, Jaslin Boyd (Year 4), placed first in her heat and was unlucky not to get a ribbon in the final.

Year 11 student Zac Henry made the finals in the 17-18 age group and won 5th, an excellent result.

Isabella Circosta injured her hand on Friday, requiring 14 stitches but still managed to place 1st in her heat, made it through two rounds of finals to earn a highly commended ribbon! Isabella had developed a real bond with her steer, Rocky, and it was wonderful to see the communication that went on between animal and handler.

Team members:

“Rocky” - Isabella Circosta and Ben Cook

“Sven” - Dee-Anna Timbrell and Ella Palmer

“Dobby” - Isabel Empson, Matilda-Jane Sternbeck, Amelia Sternbeck

“Bonnie Doon” - Abbi Lee Paul and Jaslin Boyd

“Dirty Harry” -  Zac Henry and Bryn Morgan-Mythen

“Junior” - Olivia Lambkin (Olivia bred this steer herself)

“Tex”  - Cody Purvis and Shanae Howard

Our show team is now in the stages of getting ready to exhibit cattle at Sydney Royal next year.
