ASPIRE BLOG: 2016 Audition Information

It’s that time of year when we’re gearing up for ASPIRE auditions. Forms are now available on the website and in your schools and I encourage anyone with a passion for the performing arts to give it a go.

The Audition process can be daunting, particularly for students who have never been through an audition process before so I have put some information on them below to attempt to demystify the process a little.

ASPIRE has ensembles in DRAMA, VOCAL, DANCE, STANGE BAND and STRINGS. Anyone who will be attending a Catholic School in 2016 can audition. You can audition for as many different ensembles as you like but you will be asked to select your preference when you attend your audition.

Audition dates

  • Monday November 2nd Dance and Stage Band
  • Wednesday November 4th Drama
  • Vocal Thursday November 5th Vocal

Aspire Drama Ensemble

Requirements to audition: None! You do not have to do drama outside of school, you just need to be interested in drama and enjoy it.

You need to bring: Nothing, but wear comfortable clothing you can move around in

The Audition: You will be placed in a group of approximately 20 other students of similar ages. The audition will start with a half hour drama workshop during which auditionees will be asked to take part in a number of simple drama exercises. The audition panel are looking for students who work well in groups, share their ideas, improvise well, take on different characters and above all give everything a go.

For the second part of the audition you are required to select a 1 minute monologue and prepare it to perform in front of the group. A list of websites that will help you select a monologue will be provided in your audition confirmation letter

Aspire Vocal Ensemble

Requirements to audition: None! You do not have to have private singing lessons, you just need to enjoy singing

You need to bring: Nothing, but wear comfortable clothing you can move around in

The Audition: You will be placed in a group of approximately 20 other students of similar ages. The first half of the audition will involve the entire group learning a song and being given some simple movement to perform the song with. The audition panel are looking for people who, take on the movement and direction given and really ‘perform’ the song.

For the second part of the audition you are required to sing a verse and chorus of a song of your choice. Some ideas to help you select the right song will be provided in your audition confirmation letter.

Aspire Dance Ensemble

Requirements to audition: You must have formal dance training

You need to bring: Appropriate shoes and clothing. If you tap or do pointe please bring your shoes as well in case we require you to showcase your skills there

The Audition: You will be placed in a group of approximately 20 other students of similar ages. The dance audition will take the form of an hour long workshop during which you will be taken through some standard exercises, learn a new piece of choreography and do a little of your own choreography where you are encouraged to show off your skillset.

Aspire String and Stage Bands

Requirements to audition: You should have lessons on your instrument and be able to read music notation

You need to bring: Your instrument if it is portable. There will be a drum kit, electric piano and amplification for electric guitar/bass

The Audition: The audition will last approximately ten minutes and will comprise of playing a piece of music of your own choice, some sight reading and possibly some improvisation on your instrument if you play percussion/drums/guitar/piano/bass

Please note all auditions are closed and parents may not observe. The audition panel is made up of the ASPIRE artistic director and Ensemble director and their decision is final. It’s important to remember that unfortunately we can’t accept everyone and therefore some students will be disappointed.
