GALLERY: St Columban’s commemorates Anzac centenary

Members of Waratah Mayfield RSL Sub Branch joined students and staff of St Columban’s Primary School, Mayfield to celebrate the Anzac centenary with a liturgy. To commemorate the centenary, St Columban’s dedicated a memorial garden as a peaceful place of remembrance for generations to come.

The garden was funded by a Department of Veterans’ Affairs local area grant and was opened by Federal Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon MP. Cr Claydon took the opportunity to remind students of the importance of dedicating a ‘forever place’ for future Anzac services and liturgy to be held.

The garden, designed by Olivia Jones of Liv Jones’ Designs, was decorated by students with hand-painted rocks, rosemary and soon-to-be-planted poppies.

Principal Jenny Crichton prayed for those who had laid down their lives, while students symbolically placed a wreath and rosemary sprigs as a sign of remembrance.

Lest we forget.
