KidsMatter at St Joseph’s East Maitland

Launching a new wellbeing initiative at St Joseph’s Primary School, East Maitland, principal Anthony Weir said that while “Kids have always mattered here at St Joseph’s, now it’s official!”

Catholic Schools Weeks was an appropriate time to launch KidsMatter, a national program that recognises and addresses the needs of an increasing number of children living with mental health issues.

Mr Weir, speaking to The Maitland Mercury, said, “We hear of kids who are a bit sad or a bit down and, where once we may have dismissed it, nowadays we are more attuned to listening carefully and giving assistance and support....these are little kids and if we can give them the tools and strategies to improve their...wellbeing, chances are, as they become adults, they’ll be better equipped to deal with things.”

The launch ceremony featured a dramatic unveiling of a new school banner and took place within the context of a liturgy celebrating Catholic Schools Week. Following the liturgy, parents and grandparents were invited to visit open classrooms and to stay for morning tea.
