Catholic Schools Week at St Patrick's Swansea

St Patrick’s Primary School, Swansea, is a community that acknowledges and respects Aboriginal culture and heritage and the ongoing relationship that the Awabakal people have with the land on which our school stands.

We launched Catholic Schools Week with a liturgy in our outdoor sacred space. At the beginning of our liturgy, Tammy Wright and Rebecca Leahy performed a smoking ceremony and a water blessing ceremony.

The smoking ceremony cleanses our hearts and minds so that we all gather in unity. The water blessing ceremony draws upon the waters and spirits of the rivers and renews us in our baptism. These ceremonies set the tone for what was to become a very moving liturgy.

The students watched, listened and participated respectfully. It truly was a very sacred moment.
