Nelson Bay student awarded BK Medallion

Ten-year-old Grace Hewitt from St Michael's Primary School, Nelson Bay is a talented sportsperson and very humble about her many achievements. The Year 5 student was awarded the BK Medallion last week.

The BK 'Boxing Kangaroo' Medallion is presented by the Australian Olympic Committee to primary school students who demonstrate the a.s.p.i.r.e values in the classroom, the playground and on the sporting field.

"Grace is very determined and focused when training and competing and always displays beautiful manners, a smile and sportsmanship towards her competitors after an event no matter what the outcome," school teacher Debbie Black said.

Some examples of Grace's achievements are holding a State record in Little Athletics for the under 10's 70m, being the Under 9's State Sprint Champion in the 2013 Surf Lifesaving Championships and this year she made it to the State All Schools Athletics Championships for Long Jump.

"She also competes in many team sports and is a co-operative and well liked team player," Ms Black said.

"In the classroom and around the school she is someone who always presents herself and anything she does with pride.

"She has the qualities of a leader, treats others with respect and relates well to her peers and teachers alike."
